Central Virginia Regional Jail, often shortened to CVRJ, is the main adult detention facility serving Greene County. It is a regional authority jail in Orange, not a Greene-owned jail building. Adults accused or convicted in Greene may be held there alongside people tied to Fluvanna, Louisa, Madison, and Orange Counties. The jail also reports holding local, state, and federal prisoners. That mix makes the destination field as important as the release time.

A community release may follow bond, dismissal, time served, or an executed court order. Yet the word release can also mark the end of CVRJ's custody while another agency takes control. A state-responsible sentence can lead to the Virginia Department of Corrections. A warrant, detainer, federal matter, immigration process, or another county case can produce a direct transfer. Virginia's jail release standard requires positive identification, valid release authority, and a check for holds before a person leaves. The durable record should identify the authority and recorded destination.

Confirm a CVRJ Release

No public CVRJ roster, release archive, or browseable recent-release list was found on the official jail site as of the research date. 4. Check the Greene court disposition or release order. The order explains legal authority, but not always the exact physical exit.
5. Request the executed release entry when date, time, type, hold status, or destination must be confirmed.

Identify the adult by full name and aliases. Add the approximate booking and release dates, Greene County as the committing jurisdiction, and a case or booking number if known. Ask for existing intake records, the executed release or discharge entry, the release authority or type, any transfer notation, the recorded destination, and the disposition of other holds. Virginia FOIA does not require an agency to create a report that it does not keep.

A focused request is more useful than asking whether someone is "out." Ask for electronic copies if the records are normally kept that way, along with an advance estimate. Under Virginia FOIA § 2.2-3704, a public body has several lawful response options within the statutory period, including production, a supported withholding, a partial response, or notice that records cannot be found. Greene's Regional Jail Structure

Greene County's jail-board page confirms that CVRJ serves five member counties. The authority structure divides records among agencies. Greene Sheriff may hold the arrest, incident, or transport record. CVRJ holds the regional booking and release record. The Greene court holds the case order. Sending every question to the Sheriff can miss the executed jail entry stored in Orange.

The same county page describes regular jail-board meetings as occurring on the second Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at the facility. That schedule should be checked against the current agenda before a visit. A board meeting is not a route for person-specific custody facts, but it documents how Greene participates in the regional authority.

The official CVRJ home page lists no public inmate roster, 24-hour or 72-hour list, released-photo archive, public retention window, or sheriff-style release app. That is a real limit, not evidence that the underlying records do not exist. Named-person VINE checks, telephone confirmation, court research, and a focused record request remain the correct chain.

CVRJ Records and Facility Growth

The CVRJ history page says the jail began operating in 1990 with a design capacity of 96 and an original staff of 50. A 50-bed dormitory and two classrooms were added in 1995. In 1999, the authority added 101 beds as well as an infirmary, recreation, visitation, laundry, and sally-port improvements. The same page states that CVRJ has 156 staff and holds about 400 local, state, and federal prisoners, although the statement has no visible update date. A separate 2021–22 report records 2,753 admissions and an average daily population of 331 for its reporting period. Those figures describe facility activity, not Greene County releases. Admissions must never be relabeled as release counts.

Greene Court and CVRJ Records

A Greene court disposition may show bond, dismissal, conviction, a suspended term, or an active sentence. It does not show every step CVRJ took after the judge acted. Release staff still verify identity, authority, and other holds. A court order can therefore precede physical departure, and another custodian can take control at the jail door.

Greene General District and qualifying adult J&DR records use the combined clerk route. Felony final orders and appeals use Circuit Court. Juvenile delinquency is excluded from the public adult search and must not be folded into this workflow.

CVRJ Reentry Limits

The CVRJ reentry page names councils in Louisa and Madison, but it does not identify a Greene-specific council. The verified regional Greene channel is OAR/Jefferson Area Community Corrections through its Orange satellite. Readers should call that program to confirm current intake and scope. A neighboring county's listed service must not be presented as automatically open to Greene residents.

Reentry support also does not prove legal release. Pretrial services can supervise a person whom a court allowed out before the case ended. Parole and probation are forms of community supervision. Each status requires its own current agency confirmation, separate from the CVRJ entry showing when and where jail custody ended.

Before relying on any program listing, confirm that it serves Greene residents and ask which documents the participant must bring. Program enrollment and correctional discharge remain separate facts.
