Greene County Release Records Explained
Most adults arrested on Greene charges are held at Central Virginia Regional Jail, or CVRJ, in Orange. Greene County does not run a conventional standalone adult jail. That regional setup divides the paper trail. The Greene County Sheriff may hold the arrest or transport record, CVRJ holds the regional jail booking and release record, and the correct Greene court holds the order or case disposition. A person can therefore have records in three offices even though one local case led to custody.
“Released” must be read with care. Bond, dismissal, time served, or a court order may end confinement and return someone to the community. Parole can end prison confinement while state supervision continues. A transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, another jail, federal custody, or immigration custody ends one agency’s hold but does not free the person. Virginia jail rules require identity checks, valid release authority, and a review for other holds before an exit is processed.
- Discharge
- The end of a custodian’s sentence or legal control, which may differ from the date physical confinement ends.
- Time served
- Release after the required period of confinement has been credited and completed.
- Detainer
- A notice that another agency or jurisdiction may take custody when the current hold ends.
- Parole
- Conditional community release for an eligible prison sentence under the Virginia Parole Board and VADOC.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision that can follow confinement or accompany a suspended jail or prison term.
Greene County Inmate Release Types
The exit label identifies only the first part of the outcome. It should be paired with the releasing facility, date and time, authority, destination, and any remaining hold. Those details distinguish a community return from a transfer. They also show whether another system should be searched next.
| Release type | What it means | Next record to check |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court release | The court authorized pretrial freedom under stated terms. | Greene court order plus CVRJ execution and hold check |
| Dismissal | The identified charge ended, though another case or hold may remain. | Court disposition and jail destination entry |
| Time served or discharge | The responsible term ended after lawful credit and final review. | Executed release record and any supervision document |
| Parole or probation | Physical custody may end while legal supervision continues. | VADOC locator, release papers, and District 26 |
| Transfer | CVRJ custody ended because another custodian received the person. | VADOC, another jail, BOP, USMS, or ICE as applicable |
A death or escape may also close or change a custody entry, but neither is a routine community release. Ask for the exact event language. Do not infer it from a missing search result.
Note: A release date without a destination cannot distinguish freedom from a direct transfer to another custodian.
Greene County Release Record Fields
A focused request should seek existing fields rather than ask CVRJ to prepare a new report. No official source confirms that every field sits on one CVRJ form. Still, these categories identify the facts needed to verify who left, why the hold ended, when staff executed the event, and what happened next.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Legal name, aliases, date of birth, identifier | Separates people with similar names and links the right booking. |
| Booking number and intake date | Connects the release entry to a specific period of confinement. |
| Charges or commitment authority | Identifies why the custodian held the person. |
| Executed release date and time | Records when that custodian completed its exit process. |
| Release authority or type | May identify bond, court order, time served, discharge, parole, or transfer. |
| Destination or transfer notation | Distinguishes community release from movement to another custodian. |
| Hold or detainer disposition | Shows whether another agency’s legal claim affected the outcome. |
| Booking photograph | Links identity to intake, but does not establish release or case outcome. |
VADOC release papers are more clearly defined. Its release process may include an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, Conditions of Parole, signatures, dates, and a notification-of-release letter. These papers help separate the physical exit from later supervision. A recorded detainer can still turn the event into a transfer.
Request Greene County Release Records
For a regional jail booking or release, direct the first request to the CVRJ Custodian of Records. Send mail to 13021 James Madison Highway, Orange, VA 22960, or call 540-672-3222 to ask about a current electronic route and estimate. CVRJ does not publish a flat fee or its own fixed response promise. A Greene Sheriff request is better for sheriff-created arrest, incident, warrant, transport, or image records.
- Give the person’s full name, aliases, and approximate booking or release dates. Add the case or booking number if known.
- State that Greene County was the arrest or committing jurisdiction and that CVRJ was the regional facility.
- Ask for the existing booking record, executed release entry, date and time, authority or type, destination, and hold disposition.
- Request electronic copies if the records are kept that way, and ask for a written cost estimate before work begins.
- If CVRJ has no responsive record, ask whether another known custodian can be identified. Narrow the request rather than demand a new list.
Virginia FOIA generally requires one of its authorized responses within five working days. The office may produce records, cite a legal basis for withholding, release part with stated redactions, report that records cannot be found, or invoke extra time when production is impractical. Charges must reflect actual reasonable costs. A request need not cite the law, but it must describe the records with reasonable specificity.
Greene County Release Record Law
Virginia Code § 2.2-3704 governs the request process for eligible Virginia citizens and qualifying media representatives. Law-enforcement and correctional records also carry specific disclosure rules and exemptions. Juvenile identity is restricted. Investigative, confinement, parole, or probation material may be withheld or redacted under an applicable provision, even when a basic adult booking or release fact is available.
Virginia’s criminal sealing chapter took effect July 1, 2026. It can restrict public access to qualifying arrest, charge, conviction, and related agency or court records. Automatic sealing applies only to defined categories and conditions, while other matters use a petition route. Expungement follows a separate law and procedure. Neither process supports a broad guess about one person. A public search miss can reflect scope, spelling, system lag, discharge, sealing, or expungement.
No CVRJ public roster or archive was found, so there is no verified online retention period to state. Web display and agency retention are different. Ask the custodian whether the historical record still exists.
Note: A sealed search result may disappear from public view without changing the fact that custody once occurred.
Greene County Release Pickup Details
CVRJ publishes no release hour, exit door, family waiting area, weekend procedure, or property-pickup instructions. That verified gap matters. A person waiting at the wrong place or time may mistake routine processing for a failed release. No standard pickup hour should be assumed.
Ask CVRJ whether valid release authority has arrived, final processing is complete, another hold exists, property is ready, and pickup is allowed. The jail’s official contact page is the source for current contact instructions. Staff may limit what they disclose, but only the facility can give a current operational answer.
Greene County Bond Release Process
Greene General District Court lists bond hearings on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. OAR/Jefferson Area Community Corrections serves Greene through its Orange satellite and may take part in pretrial services when the court uses that route. A bond release means pretrial freedom under conditions. It is not a dismissal, acquittal, or completed sentence.
The judge’s decision must still reach the jail. CVRJ then verifies identity, authority, and other holds before processing the exit. A court entry proves judicial action, not the hour a person left the building. Join the order with a CVRJ event or executed release entry.
CVRJ Admissions, Not Greene Releases
CVRJ’s 2021-22 annual report recorded 2,753 admissions and an average daily population of 331 for its reporting year. Those are facility-wide figures for a regional jail serving five counties. They are not Greene County release totals.
The numbers show substantial movement through the institution, which makes full identifiers important. They cannot answer who left, when a Greene case ended, or whether an exit went to the community. Only person-specific custody, court, and destination records can do that.
Find Greene County Released Inmates
Begin with the last known custodian. For a local Greene arrest, the strongest path combines Virginia Jail VINE, CVRJ, the correct court, and a focused release-record request. The official CVRJ site confirms the five-county regional role and its VINE entry point.
The CVRJ home page shows the regional service area and local Jail VINE access.
That page is a starting point for one-person status checks, not a browseable release archive.
- Search Virginia Jail VINE by the person’s name or offered ID and choose the relevant local or regional jail agency.
- Compare identifiers. If the person appears in custody, the reporting custodian has not recorded a release.
- Call CVRJ if a release event appears or the name is absent. Ask whether the event was community release or transfer.
- Search Virginia OCIS with the name, case number, or hearing date and select Greene plus the correct court level.
- Check VADOC if a state-responsible sentence, parole, probation, or state transfer applies.
- Request the executed CVRJ entry when durable proof of date, time, type, or destination is needed.
Greene County VADOC Release Lookup
The official VADOC Inmate & Supervisee Locator covers people currently in state custody or active community supervision. Search by at least the first three letters of the first name and the full last name, or use the seven-digit DOC ID. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. The disclaimer must be accepted before selecting Locate.
| Search field | Input | Use and limit |
|---|---|---|
| First Name | At least three letters | Pair with the full last name and confirm identity. |
| Last Name | Full surname | Try lawful spelling variants when appropriate. |
| DOC ID# | Seven digits | Best direct identifier when known. |
| Location | Optional selection | Can narrow custody or supervision results. |
| Race, Gender, Age Range | Optional filters | Help separate similar names, but are not a substitute for an ID. |
The locator updates daily and warns that information may be inaccurate or stale. It is not promised as a complete archive for every fully discharged person. A community-supervision result may show that prison confinement ended while VADOC control continues. If a former state inmate is missing, use the VADOC inactive-offender records route and compare the court sentence.
VADOC describes the signed documents and checks used for an actual state release.
The state process applies to VADOC custody. It does not replace CVRJ’s local release entry.
Note: A projected date is a calculation; an executed release event and destination show what the custodian actually did.
Greene County Release Court Locations
Greene Court Security transports prisoners between CVRJ and courthouse holding. The combined General District and Juvenile and Domestic Relations clerk’s office is at 85 Stanard Street, while its courtroom is at 12 Ford Avenue. Circuit Court is at 22 Court Street. A person can move among these sites and CVRJ without receiving a community release.
Use Virginia OCIS for an adult criminal case, then contact the correct clerk if the public result is incomplete or a certified order is needed. General District records can explain bond, misdemeanor, or preliminary felony action. Circuit Court holds felony final orders and appealed district cases. Juvenile delinquency is excluded from the adult public path and follows restricted access rules.
The official OCIS search can filter adult cases by Greene and court level.
A disposition can show the legal reason for release, but it cannot prove when CVRJ finished processing or whether another hold took effect.
Greene County Recent Release Search
No official CVRJ or Greene Sheriff roster, booking page, 24-hour list, 72-hour list, release-photo archive, or sheriff release app was found as of August 8, 2026. This is a verified negative finding. It does not mean no releases occurred. Virginia Jail VINE searches one named person and sends custody-event notices; it is not a list of everyone released in a chosen span.
For a day or three-day range, ask the CVRJ Custodian of Records whether an existing release log covers exact start and end times. Specify Greene as the committing jurisdiction because CVRJ serves five counties. Request release type and destination so transfers are not counted as community releases. If no log exists, narrow the request to named records. Virginia FOIA does not force creation of a report.
Can a current-custody roster replace a release list? No. A live roster, when one exists, answers who remains held. It cannot supply a complete historical list of people who left.
Greene County Release Reentry Route
VADOC Culpeper District 26 serves Greene, Culpeper, Madison, and Orange for state probation and parole supervision. A locator result tied to community supervision supports that institutional confinement ended but does not mean all legal obligations ended. The district can route an appropriate public status question, subject to access limits. A final discharge from supervision is a separate record event.
CVRJ’s reentry page identifies councils in Louisa and Madison but does not name a Greene council. The verified regional route is OAR/Jefferson Area Community Corrections through its Orange satellite at 101 North Madison Road, Orange, VA 22960, telephone 540-672-2881. Call to confirm current intake and program scope. Services listed for neighboring counties should not be assumed to accept Greene residents.
Greene County Release System Boundaries
Virginia Jail VINE covers local and regional jail custody such as CVRJ. Search one person through VINELink or call 1-800-467-4943, then register for the channels and events currently offered. VADOC state-custody notifications now use NAAVI. A move from CVRJ to VADOC can require a new registration, so one alert does not follow a person across every system.
Federal records follow a separate path. A BOP locator result with location “RELEASED” and a past date means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not rule out supervised release, a state case, a local warrant, or immigration custody. A federal pretrial person handled by the U.S. Marshals Service may never enter BOP; use the federal court order and an appropriate USMS records route.
ICE’s locator covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within its stated recent window. Search by A-number and country of birth, or exact name, country of birth, and optional birth date. An ICE record is not a lasting archive. A transfer from CVRJ into ICE custody also is not a community release.
| Situation | Best source | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Still held at CVRJ | Jail VINE and CVRJ | Current reported regional-jail custody |
| Released from CVRJ | Executed CVRJ record and Greene court order | Exit date, authority, and recorded destination |
| In VADOC custody or supervision | VADOC locator, NAAVI, and VADOC records | Active state status and, when displayed, date information |
| Fully discharged from VADOC | Inactive-offender records request | Historical state release or discharge confirmation |
| Federal sentence | BOP locator and federal records | BOP status, release date, and location label |
| Recent ICE custody | ICE ODLS | Current custody or release within the stated recent window |
Greene County Regional Jail History
CVRJ opened in 1990 with a design capacity of 96. It added 50 beds in 1995 and 101 more in 1999, along with expanded medical, recreation, visitation, laundry, and secure movement spaces. The facility sits in Orange and operates through a five-county regional authority. It is not a Greene-owned jail building.
That history explains the modern records route. Greene supplies the local arrest and court setting, while the regional custodian maintains the jail record. A request sent only to the Sheriff may miss the booking and executed release entry held by CVRJ. The state jail directory separately lists the Greene County Lockup, which is a short-term sheriff and courthouse holding site.
Greene County Release Facilities
Two adult custody sites define the local search. They have different roles, custodians, and meanings when a person disappears from view.
- Central Virginia Regional Jail is the primary regional adult jail. Release may mean community return or transfer to VADOC, another jurisdiction, federal custody, or another hold.
- Greene County Lockup handles short courthouse or sheriff holding. An exit can mean return to CVRJ, bond or court release, transfer, or custody elsewhere.
No VADOC prison or federal prison was identified within Greene County. Greensville Correctional Center is in Greensville County and must not be confused with Greene. The correct source follows the custodian, not the county name that sounds similar.
Note: A person leaving the Greene County Lockup may simply be returning to CVRJ rather than entering the community.
